repress !! students red axes are very excited to present the first part of their new project called: trips, a multi media venture combining music, film and travelling across the globe in pursuit of extra ordinary collaborations. niv arzi and dori sadovnik are seeking to discover new grounds and sounds, and to record local musicians, indigenous instruments and present workshops for youth music schools. in march of 2017, the israeli duo touched down in africa for the first time, and set up camp in both ethiopia and ivory coast, yielding in africa, a triple header ep which features three slices of contemporary body music, with both east and west african musical motifs. the project will always present a musical release, on vinyl and digital, that was created on the trip, accompanied with a documentary, showing the whole journey.

for our 10th release, we have compiled a double-vinyl package featuring various artists who hail from our hometown of toronto. with music from veteran and new names in equal measure, the collection is as diverse as the city’s influences. the common thread throughout — and the ethos of our label — is dance music with a future-facing bent.

ow finally on vinyl: artbat are bringing their first full ep release to diynamic music. the three-tracker -planeta- starts off with the title track -planeta-, a rapid-fire techno odyssey that might as well be taken from a relentless pursuit in a futuristic action movie. this is followed by the gloomy bassline of -prometheus-. heavy on percussive elements, the track is divided in half by a cascading synth-break only to return with more layers of percussions, strings and the hypnotic bassline. closing off the ep is -sand in your shoes- featuring london based artist dino lenny, who has previously worked with madonna or wu-tang clan and produced remixes for underworld, missy elliot or timbaland. the collab track is a dreamy deep-house tune and a perfectly emotive way to finish the record.

“choose life” is both the album apostille chose to make and had to make. he dialled down the clown, built up a new-found confidence in his voice and melody in general and began to feel more at home in the refuge of pop music (with a capital p). as kasparis explains “choose life began as a chronicle of a bad time. many of the songs were written as some sort of catharsis, an escape from a tumultuous couple of years. the album title was intended as ironic at first but as the writing process went on the album began to feel more playful, i was finding revelatory threads in it i hadn t intended. choose life became an imperative.” all the truest pop music speaks to us of escape and through this new album apostille allows its transformative power to fully manifest. it’s an album full of life and energy, as disobedient as it is heroic in its pursuit of liberation.

sami baha is a turkish producer based in south east london. his music was introduced to the world via his 2016 ep “mavericks” (planet mu), recorded while he was moving from istanbul to london where he’s now been living the last 3 years. sami got into producing through being a rapper himself, working with local rappers in turkey and producing beats for them, before setting his sights outside the country.
while his first record was focused around a more familiar trap based hiphop sound, “free for all” expands its range into more unfamiliar territory and also brings his production into focus by featuring a number of mcs from all corners of the globe: uk drill squad 67’s dimzy, stockholm’s yung lean and chicago rapper and singer dj nate (aka flexxbabii) who’s previously recorded on planet mu as a footwork producer. the record also features the rowdy sing-song of egyptian mcs dawsha and abanob from cairo whom sami met while on tour in egypt.

strange valleys, the 2018 full-length from starving daughters, is a progression as well as a shift in sound from the la band s already-stellar previous releases. make no doubt about it that the sound of progressive rock and psychedelia still play a big role here but there s certainly a greater influence from library music on the new lp. the starving daughters vinyl impressions blog, led by chris tillotson of the band, shared the music of chris s collection of which many were library lp s. these records seemed to have seeped into the mind, body, and souls of the whole band on this strange valleys lp. everything from the instrumentation, the attention to melody, to the track-length shows the large appreciation they have for library music. that being said, this moog-heavy, psychedelic-prog-funk, california-themed record is certainly unique and adventurous. winding through the exotic roads of strange valleys is certainly a trip well worth taking over and over again.

the sandy beaches of new south wales, australia, give way to dusty beats of aussie producer shinji in this funky seven inch single on cold busted. taken from his forthcoming album in colour (coming in april 2018), this single features two retro-tastic tracks that will send the beatheads swinging across the floor. “second wind” opens up with heavy rhodes piano chords accompanied by a crucial rhythm and streetwise horns. evoking the soundtrack to a tv detective series from the ‘70s, the cut unloads serious action in a 45-slinger’s dj set. flip the record for “grand mash,” which begins in the hip hop zone before soundtracking a movie scene of the pimp-mobile once again in pursuit. groovy horns, tough beats, and a way-cool-for-school spoken interlude move this one to the top of the crate-digging charts. shinji strongly delivers the goods, queuing things up nicely for his sure-to-be essential long-player.

the next chapter in shaw cuts comes from russian duo poima, who celebrate their debut record twin blades of doom – a fierce revenge mission and hunt after the infamous ghost gang. the pursuit opens with triglau , its linear machine groove levelling a fraction of the ghost gang. heads roll on a crimson floor. teaming up with mysterious masked warrior inland, triglau morphs into a hypnotic trip. pushing drum rhythms and swirling pads combine with nasty noise elements, propelling the hunt. the remaining enemy members are already hatching their next evil move. on the way to lu he village where the ghost gang plans its next assault, analogue break-beat punches and swinging percussions weave a menacing tapestry of sound, crushing the bones of rogue creatures in its path. serbian slayer regen arrives in force for the final showdown at qi dou town where the ghost gang plans a huge heist. armed with atmospheric pads and a soaring drum crescendo, his interpretation of bones ends the ghost gang tyranny in one fatal sweep. and the saga goes on...

the first release in the crime combo series, in collaboration with the beat records company and for the fisrt time on vinyl, is the soundtrack to the italian polizziottesco movie italia a mano armata. the movie was directed in 1976 by franco martinelli. the soundtrack is an excellent strength test by maestro composer franco micalizzi that for this movie has created a varied and passionate score, tapping the wind sections into an irresistible seventies funk crescendo and alternating melodic themes. the soundtrack feature the track the no-peace pursuit that was later on selected by quentin tarantino for his grindhouse movie death proof. if you love 70ies crime soundtracks, this is a must for your collection! the soundtracks is released in a hand numbered 500 copies limited edition 180 gram vinyl in gatefold sleeve including the original cinema poster.

for the past two years, nils frahm has been building a brand new studio in berlin to make his 7th studio album titled all melody, which will be released on january 26th, 2018 via erased tapes, before nils embarks on his first world tour since 2015.
since the day nils first encountered the impressive studio of a family friend, he had envisioned to create one of his own at such a large scale. fast forward to the present day and nils is now the proud host of saal 3, part of the historical 1950s east german funkhaus building beside the river spree. it is here where he has spent most of his time deconstructing and reconstructing the entire space from the cabling and electricity to the woodwork, before moving on to the finer elements, building a pipe organ and creating a mixing desk all from scratch with the help of his friends. this is somewhere music can be nurtured and not neglected, and where he can somewhat fulfil his pursuit of presenting music to the world as close to his imagination as possible.
